If you haven’t been following tech news then let me quickly bring you up to speed on the ever growing touch screen craze that is taking over the technology world. Ever since Apple’s revolutionary capacitive touch iPhone and iPod Touch was introduced, there have been a slew of companies trying to get a piece of the Apple pie. An all out touch screen arms race has broken out ranging from the unknown upstarts all the way down to the usual suspects such as Microsoft, Sony, and Apple. However, it is hasn’t been easy taking on Apple’s very successful iPod line getting noticed in the portable music player space is becoming more difficult as the days go on. The only company that has a realistic chance of competing with the iPod Touch is Microsoft because of their marketing reach and almost endless cash support. News recently surfaced of Microsoft’s iPod Touch answer, the Zune HD, initiating another all out tech war between the two companies.
Apple has just announced that new iPod Touch models will be available for purchase today. The refreshed non camera having iPod Touch models are basically unchanged on the outside but add a boost of speed and power inside putting them on par with the iPhone 3GS-but without cameras. The 8 GB, 32 GB, and the newly added 64 GB models are priced at $199, $299, & $399 respectively. Although there are no dramatic changes in the the iPod Touch updates, this does even the playing field for a much anticipated Zune HD vs iPod Touch showdown. I personally believe that Apple’s iPod Touch has a huge advantage because their App Store, which contains over 75,000 applications, is very mature and robust. Microsoft’s lack of an App Store contender is an issue that they’re going to have to resolve if they plan on taking on the current PMP kings. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this all plays out, so I ask you will Microsoft be annihilated once again or will this turn into a head to head match up?
Also new iPod Nano models have been announced and they are also available today with an added camera for video recording, a microphone, speaker, pedometer, FM radio support, and Voice Over. The 8 GB Nano is priced at $149 and the 16 GB Nano is marked at $179.

Microsoft has just announced that the much hyped iPod Touch contender, the Zune HD, will be available for purchase on Tuesday September the 15th. It has also been announced that the Zune HD will be up for pre-order today at select stores such as Walmart, Best Buy, online Microsoft store, and Amazon.
For over 2 years Apple’s iPod Touch has been in a league of its own, completely unchallenged and now with the Zune HD there may actually be a contender with enough financial support to initiate a great tech war. Microsoft, knowing that the iPod Touch is a fierce opponent with a significant lead, decided to include differentiating features such as a Nvidia Tegra processor, OLED capacitive multi-touch screen, HD video out-put, and a HD radio tuner. However, what is unknown is if the new iPod Touch, which is rumored to be released sometime this fall, will obliterate any of these features.
The Zune HD will be available in a black 16GB ($220) version and a platinum 32GB ($290) version. So will Microsoft’s Zune HD have enough muscle to take on the almighty iPod Touch? I guess we’ll have to wait and watch because in the end everything will be revealed.
Update: The Zune HD will also be available in colors teal blue, lime green, and maroon red.

Lately there’s been a lot of tech news floating around involving the recent touchscreen craze. We’ve recently heard news that Palm’s latest smartphone, the Pre, is being released on June 6th to compete head on with the iPhone, G1 and Storm. Not to mention the rumors that a brand new iPhone model is set to be released this summer. Now Microsoft, who has basically been left in the dust due to Apple’s iPod Touch line, is trying to comeback hard with news that they will be releasing a touch screen Zune HD to compete with the iPod Touch this coming Fall.
Here’s what Chris Stephenson, general manager of global marketing for Microsoft Zune had to say.”This device is created to go head to head with the iPod Touch”
Microsoft confirmed that the Zune HD will be completely multitouch with a top of the line OLED capacitive touchscreen that will be able to play music, receive digital radio, play HD videos and browse the web. Also the Zune HD will supposedly feature a HD radio tuner, allow you to play HD content on your TV via a dock and sync in with the Xbox experience. No further info on specs or price was revealed but I know this is going to get all the tech heads buzzing. In addition, rumors are also flying around that Apple is planning to update the iPod touch line with cameras in September, it seems like this is going to to be one hell of a gadget match.
The new Zune HD sounds very intriguing but I personally believe that they should have spent little more time on the hardware design, I don’t know what they were thinking with those screws showing in the back. For some people it comes down to the look of the item and Microsoft is gonna need more then just specs to take down the iPod. With that being said who do you think will emerge as the winner in the latest hyped tech war Apple or Microsoft?
