Ever since the first iPhone was introduced back in 2007 there was a silent “coup d’état” where Apple claimed the top spot over all the other smartphone devices as the new leader. Apple basically revolutionized the smartphone industry for two major reasons- the iPhone had a sleek sexy hardware design and the software created an intuitive experience unmatched by any other smartphone interface of its time. One company after another released iPhone competitors each being toted as the “iPhone killer” however weeks after the phones release, that new device was slain by the almighty iPhone into obscurity.
However early January 2009 the financially struggling smartphone company, Palm, introduced a device that had an eerily “iPhone like” interface which was uncontrollably being branded by the media as the new iPhone competitor or “iPhone Killer”. Yet this claim had some legitimacy because this smartphone was much different from the others which had tried and failed, that is it had one or more of the characteristics that made the iPhone a major success and even added some impressive features of its own such as multi-tasking and Palm Synergy. These major similarities between the iPhone and the Pre could easily be explained because Palm had an ex-Apple guy running the entire show.
Months and weeks leading up to the Pre’s release the hype just kept building and building until finally the Pre was released this past Saturday. In order to keep the match as fair as possible, as many rumors rightly indicated, Apple released their newest iPhone model “3G S” at their WWDC Developers Conference today. The iPhone 3G S has the same overall design as the previous 3G model however it features a 3 mega-pixel auto focus camera, video capture support with video editing, digital compass, voice controls, faster processor, more battery time, faster wireless technologies, fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating and the iPhone 3.0 software.
The iPhone 3GS is set to be released on June 19th for $199 16GB/ $299 32GB with a 2 year contract. As of today the 8Gb iPhone 3G will be sold fo $99 and the promised 3.0 upgrade will be available on June 17th for previous iPhone and iPod Touch owners. This new iPhone model somewhat evens the score setting up a gadget match off like no other just as the many matches before – iPhone vs Instinct, iPhone vs BlackBerry Storm, iPhone vs G1. However the Pre could possibly be a real competitor unlike the others but I personally believe that the Pre is lacking in hardware design. With that being said which phone do you think will emerge as the winner in the latest hyped tech wars The Apple iPhone 3G S or the Palm Pre?

Sprint has just announced that the much hyped iPhone contender Palm Pre is scheduled to be released on Saturday June 6. The Palm Pre which was very much influenced by the iPhone is said to feature touch screen multi-touch, a full qwerty keyboard, Palm webOS, Palm Synergy, camera with flash, web browsing, GPS, media player, and background multi-tasking. Check out the post we did on the Pre a few months back for more info here.
The Palm Pre will be available through Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and select Wal-mart stores for $199 after $100 mail in rebate and a Sprint 2 year contract or $549 without contract. The Pre will also include the Touchstone charging dock kit for an extra $69.99. The Pre will be under Sprint’s Everything Data or Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plans. Will the new Palm Pre measure up to the iPhone or will it just fall victim to its almighty rein just as the Instinct, G1, Storm, and the several other so called “iPhone Killers” have? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Smartphone makers Palm, well known for the Treo, have just introduced, their own touch screen smartphone which is supposed to be in direct competition with the Apple iPhone and Google G1. They gave a demo of the phone at the 09 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) during the official Palm press event held in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have to say that besides the fact that the entire format of the phone is a knock of the iPhone, the phone is pretty impressive; due to the fact that they focused on certain aspects that Apple missed. But that’s what you do when you are trying to take down Number #1.
The thing that stood out to me was the new operating system webOS with Palm Synergy which supposedly allows you to switch in between tasks more efficiently and still maintain your place-much similar to desktops and laptops. Even though it has a slide out keyboard-for those of you who love touchscreen keyboards, the Pre supports copy&paste and rumor has it- the Pre may also support flash too. The Webkit based Palm Pre Browser is supposed to be rock solid- some even say better then the Safari browser.
Although the Palm Pre claims to improve functionality, the phone seriously lacks in design. The Palm Pre is round and bulky like the G1 , it does have a slight glossy shine like the iPhone 3G but what the Palm Pre and many other cell phones aiming to dethrone the iPhone are missing is simply finesse. You can tell that Apple put a lot of their time, effort, and dedication into giving the iPhone the same treatment they give all their other products; beauty. The iPhone is graceful, smooth sleek, and never fails to bring excitement to a grown man as if he were a child.
The iPhone has charisma and swagger, it glides from function to function . What all these imitators are forgetting is that the display, graphics, icons, and usability functions have to be nothing less then gorgeous to bring down the almighty Apple iPhone. I mean the 3G isn’t the last model, have you ever heard of the IPhone HD……? However I do believe that competition is good and keeps you on your toes. I think it’s best to wait until the Palm Pre actually comes out before anyone makes their full judgment.
The Palm Pre will be available in the US only under Sprint early this year and the rest of the world thereafter. When the Palm chief executive Ed Colligan was asked whether the Pre would be priced under $200. He supposedly looked at the asker as if they were crazy statingand marched of. That’s some confidence for ya. So is the Palm Pre a iPhone Killer or Stealer? You decide.
