Lakers star guard Nick “Swaggy P” Young has quickly emerged as on one of the NBA’s most popular on and off-the court personalities. The L.A. native doesn’t shy away from the big stage and many would argue that there’s no stage bigger than Hollywood. I was able to catch up with Swaggy P as he was headed to catch a flight to Chicago ahead of the Christmas Day showdown against the Bulls to get a better understanding of what is behind all that swag.

I wrote another article for the NBA about how music’s biggest stars are influencing the NBA’s most current fashions. I’ll be a recurring style correspondent for the NBA, so look out for more of my editorials.

“I swear sports and music are so synonymous, cause we want to be them, and they want to be us.” -Drake

This line by rap artist Drake couldn’t be more telling. Legions of youth across several generations grew up wanting to either rock the stage like Jay-Z or dunk a basketball like Michael Jeffrey Jordan. So it shouldn’t have been a surprise in the mid-90s and early 2000s when athletic apparel, like team jerseys and sneakers, dominated hip-hop style. But with time comes change – nowadays with fedora hats, designer frames, and luxury sneakers, it is easy to see that it’s music’s biggest stars who are now influencing most of the current NBA off-court fashion trends.

I recently wrote my first article for the NBA about how the arriving tunnel is the new runway. I’ll be a recurring style correspondent for the NBA, so look out for more of my editorials.

Like many NBA fans, I was watching TNT on Oct. 30th as they covered one of the most anticipated games of the new season. LeBron James’ return to Cleveland was dominating the coverage across the sports networks, but as a die-hard basketball fan turned fashion blogger I was shamelessly less intrigued by The King’s return home, and more interested in the pre-game coverage to see who wore what as they arrived to the game. So when LeBron made his cinematic appearance through the arena tunnel before the game, I was attentive and locked in. I knew it was an important night for him and his brand and I was certain that LeBron was going to dress the part. And that’s just when it donned on me – the NBA tunnel is the player’s runway. We’ve just been late to our seats.
