One of the first striking things about Vetements is the love of text! F/W 16 was full of witty banter: Justin4Ever, You Fuck’n Asshole, May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way. Vetements relishes the topical nod through words, so look for pieces this season that build off of this. Remember all those old cheap shirts that were in and of themselves meme-ish, like “I’m With Stupid ->”, think like that but elevated.
Size Up Your Bomber
Another noted quirk of Vetements is the oversized fit, which has allowed the female only collection to be worn by men. This season Vetements continued with this narrative offering up more of these XXXL sized garments, specifically their bomber jackets. The easiest way to embrace this trend is to bump up a size, or two if you’re feeling super adventurous, when buying your next bomber. The effect will create the disheveled je ne sais quoi du jour at Vetements right now.
We’ve seen Rock ‘n Roll (Saint Laurent), we’ve seen Hip-Hop (Balmain), elements of Punk (Off-White), but Vetements has delivered on a new sub-genre to tap into: Goth. Yeah, you know those kids with the Megadeath t-shirts, or Korn, and black finger nail polish. Maybe you don’t have to take it that extreme, but incorporating elements from goth culture can benefit you to achieve the Vetements vibe.
