Can you believe someone actually paid ($104,327,006) for this burnt sculpture of a walking anorexic man? Well, the sculpture isn’t actually burnt, but it sure looks like it. The piece is titled “L’Homme Qui Marche I”( Walking Man I) and was sculpted by Swiss/Italian artist Alberto Giacometti in 1961. After a fierce bidding war at the Sotheby’s London “Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale” auction, the bronze sculpture was sold to an anonymous rich person for a world record $104.3 million. I know some might call this sculpture art, but I would call it worthless or priceless at best. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around so called “Modern Art”, because anything good or bad can fall under that category. What amazes me is how much some people will pay for this kind of art even though its value is based on the hype that surrounds it. The moral of this story is- as long as you build up enough hype you can sell just about anything to anyone.
Update: The buyer was Brazilian Billionaire Lily Safra

well.. compare it to fashion… then its not so crazy. reason people buy expensive stuff, is also because there hype. this is just art
Would LV actually be so “cool” if all the celebs stopped rocking it??
For a website that focuses on laxury good i expected more from you.if you took the time to read up on the Artist you would realise his work is not hype his work has been rising in value since his death. Also his work is not categorized as “modern art” the youth look to your website for guidance step your game up … its ok to not agree but at least publish truth !
Lol they’re going in on the editor truth be told it is art. And art is truth, my problem is this and I may be wrong because I know zero about the purchaser, with all that’s going on in the world especially Haiti my hope is that they are an avid philanthropist and if say 100 mill for s piece of art surely 2bill to haiti is sufficient… The gods must be crazy
What ignorance smh.. how can you just criticize the sculpture/buyer bc you think the piece is ugly.
I actually think the art piece is quite expressive.
Imho, if 94 million is donated to Africa or Haiti
the leftover is still enough for use most families for the
rest of their lives
just my two cent
And isn’t this entry too judgmental and not enough facts?
speaking on things you dont have any idea about is never a good look
“What amazes me is how much some people will pay for this kind of art even though its value is based on the hype that surrounds it.”
You shouldn’t be. You run a website called ‘Upscale Hype’ which showcases clothing whose inflated price is solely based on the hype that surrounds it.
I think the sculpture is wonderful. Everyone has their different opinions and it wasn’t just the sculture that made the final bid so high. It was Alberto Giacometti. Really, no-one cares that much about the piece of art, they care about who created it. Giacometti was an amazing artist and the prices of his art, as you rightly said Bob, have been increasing enormously. It just comes to show that not everyone is affected by the recession and there are still extremely wealthy people out there.
By the way, I don’t think it is ugly at all.
